The Facebook Messenger application, also known as Messenger since the merger with Instagram Messages last September, is along with WhatsApp one of the most widely used messaging applications in the world. However, it is not perfect. Connection problems and other bugs may appear. In this article, we will explain how to fix them for both Android and iOS. Facebook Messenger is "down" From time to time Facebook encounters large-scale problems. You can easily see if the problem is yours alone or if it is general, just go to the DownDetector website and look at the map of reported incidents. If you see red or orange, the problem is serious and comes from Facebook itself. In this case, no action from your part is needed, just wait until the problem got solved. Facebook Messenger makes my smartphone so slow Facebook Messenger has been found to consume a lot of memory and power: it obsessively checks for updates and notifications. Even when your phone is on standby or no signal, it keeps looking for a reason to do something. The app also uses a lot of storage space. If Facebook Messenger is not working on your phone, uninstall the app. Next, add a shortcut to the mobile site on your home screen and allow the site to send you push notifications if you want to continue receiving them. You can also, on most Android smartphones, manage how Messenger consumes resources. Via the storage settings, you can thus delete the cache and the storage occupied by the application. Some overlays like Samsung's OneUI also allow you to automatically close the application if it is running in the background (although all Android smartphones already do this more or less by default). Unable to receive and send messages through Messenger If you try to send a message to a particular contact but they don't receive it, don't be alarmed right away. While the situation may seem hopeless beyond comprehension, the solution could be quite simple. First, make sure the app is up to date. Go to the Google Play Store, tap the menu button, and then tap My games & apps. From there, see if Messenger is one of the apps waiting to be updated. If so, just tap on it and hit the Update button. It can also be useful to check if your friends have blocked you. If they have marked your messages as spam, you may not be able to send or receive messages on the app. Otherwise, if Facebook Messenger keeps crashing, try connecting from a PC to see if sending a message is possible from the web version, if not the problem could well be with Facebook itself, for that return to the first point of this article. On iOS, the principle is more or less the same, just go to the Apple App Store, click on your profile picture to access your account settings, then scroll to the section dedicated to apps, as shown below. How to recover lost or deleted messages on Messenger? If you accidentally deleted your messages then you are out of luck; they are gone. But maybe you just archived them? If so, you can view the archived conversations by typing the name of the recipient (s) in the Messenger search bar. Alternatively, you can also request a copy of your data from Facebook and download it from your account. On the app or the web version, go to Settings> My Facebook data> Download my data. You can then select to download messages only. You can also choose the period concerned by your research, so as not to download all your messages since 2009. You will then receive a ZIP file which could be downloaded directly from Facebook for a few days with all your messages. We tested this, and we have found all our messages, even discussions with people we blocked. However, we tried to delete a message through the Messenger app after I archived it and couldn't get a copy. The method also did not work with a single deleted message in a non-deleted conversation. Messenger app does not work or crashes for no reason If Messenger gives you a blank screen, or if you receive an error message like "Unfortunately, Facebook Messenger is no longer working", then there are a few things you can try. First, check that your Android operating system is up to date by going to Settings> About device> Software update> Update now. Make sure, however, that you are connected to Wi-Fi and have more than 50% battery before doing so. If your phone needs an update, installing it might be enough to fix the problem, if not, read on. Next, try going to Settings> Apps & notifications> See all apps> Messenger> Storage, then tap Clear storage and Clear cache. We have already illustrated the process on Android in a screenshot earlier in this article. On iOS, it is also possible to delete the cache and storage space occupied by a third-party app like Messenger, as shown below. For most parts, if the problem is not from Facebook itself, you just need to re-open, delete the cache or re-install the app to solve these problems.
