Google unveiled a significant update to its search box at the I/O conference today, marking the most substantial change in over 25 years. Naturally, the enhancements are powered by AI, which is now a common theme in tech innovations.
One year after its launch, AI Mode has attracted over one billion monthly users. Google Search is now upgraded with the Gemini 3.5 Flash model, which was also announced at I/O. This model is the new global default for all users. To support this update, Google has redesigned the search box with AI capabilities.
The company describes the new search box as “more intuitive than ever, dynamically expanding to give you space to describe exactly what you need.” It anticipates your search intent and helps formulate questions using AI-powered suggestions that go beyond simple autocomplete features.
Users can now search using a variety of inputs, including text, images, files, and videos. Even open Chrome tabs can be used as search inputs. This intelligent search box is available today in all countries and languages where AI Mode is supported. Users can easily ask follow-up questions from an AI Overview and engage in a conversational back-and-forth with AI Mode. This feature is accessible on both desktop and mobile devices worldwide.
This summer, Google will introduce search agents for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. These agents will operate 24/7 to find relevant information and keep users updated on important topics. For example, if you’re looking for an apartment, you can tell Google your specific requirements, and the agents will continuously scan for listings that match your needs and notify you when they are found.
In the US, agentic booking capabilities will expand this summer to support a wide range of new tasks, including local experiences and services. Google will even be able to call businesses on your behalf for select categories such as home repair, beauty, or pet care.
Personal Intelligence in AI Mode is also expanding to more users in nearly 200 countries and territories, covering 98 languages. No subscription is required. Users can connect Gmail and Google Photos, and soon Google Calendar will be added to the list.
