New Xbox Chief Admits Showing PS5 Logos During Xbox Games Showcase ‘Was a Miss, and I Own It’

Last Updated: May 31, 2026

Asha Sharma, the head of Xbox, has acknowledged fan frustration over Microsoft’s plan to keep showing rival platform logos at its upcoming Xbox Games Showcase, and indicated the practice will change for future events.

Sharma stepped into the top Xbox role from Phil Spencer earlier this year and has since pursued a rebrand of the gaming division aimed at winning back dedicated Xbox supporters after a stretch of growing disillusionment. Among her early moves were ending the divisive “This is an Xbox” marketing push, rolling out rapid new console features, and shifting official branding from “Xbox” to “XBOX.” Xbox reportedly moved to rebrand as XBOX as part of this broader effort to refresh the company’s image. Related plans for the June 7 showcase have already drawn scrutiny, with reports that Xbox Showcase will highlight games from other platforms.

The logo controversy flared after Microsoft, on the heels of pushing Fable back to early 2027, confirmed it would “continue the precedent” of spotlighting competing platforms during its June 7, 2026 Xbox Showcase. Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty laid this out on an official Xbox podcast, telling listeners the company would be upfront about which platforms its games are hitting. That means PlayStation logos will likely appear during the presentation.

“We’ll be very clear about what platforms a game is coming to and want to continue the precedent,” Booty said. “I think we’ve got a good system going, where we make it clear in Showcase.”

Sony does not extend the same courtesy. Its showcases, including State of Play, do not feature Xbox logos in trailers for multiplatform titles. So while Microsoft’s own trailers for games like Fable, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and even Halo: Campaign Evolved carry the PS5 badge, Sony-hosted versions of those same trailers omit the Xbox Series X and S branding entirely.

Trailers for Fable on the PlayStation YouTube channel display the PS5 logo only, while the same trailer on the Xbox YouTube account includes logos for all platforms the game is coming to.

The logo discussion unfolded against ongoing speculation about whether Microsoft might swing back toward exclusive games, something Sharma has not signaled she intends to pursue. Reports earlier this month described Sharma as “treading carefully” while weighing what to do with exclusives, though Microsoft has stated it will “reevaluate our approach to exclusivity.” That tease has stirred hope among core fans who believe Xbox hardware has lost value as Microsoft has leaned harder into multiplatform releases. A return to exclusives ranked high on the newly launched XBOX Player Voice platform, and Xbox fans have been vocal about wanting console exclusives since the feedback tool debuted.

By emphasizing that most games at its showcase will also land on PS5, Microsoft is effectively underscoring that it lacks true exclusives, at least compared to Sony, which has been pulling back from PC and deepening its commitment to console-only titles. That is the reading from some dedicated Xbox followers, though it bears noting that Gears of War: E-Day has not been confirmed for PS5.

Sharma addressed the backlash directly after user Klobrille posted on X that “the bare minimum expectation many had was for Xbox to really focus on their own platform at least for the time of the Showcase.”

Sharma responded on X: “Seeing the feedback on logos. It was a miss, and I own it. We are talking about how we adjust for future XBOX shows.”

That admission triggered its own debate. Some questioned the logic of downplaying multiplatform releases during an Xbox showcase. “Exclusives are another matter, but if it’s multiplatform, why try to convince anyone otherwise?” one observer noted.

“IMHO the people that are upset about this are really just upset that those games aren’t exclusive to Xbox. I don’t think pretending something is exclusive during your Showcase when it’s really not is particularly beneficial to anyone.”

Other fans welcomed Sharma’s stance. “XBOX Showcase needs to be for XBOX fans,” one supporter wrote. “You can’t win over new fans or keep current fans when promoting you don’t need an XBOX at your biggest spotlight of the year.”

Sharma is navigating a difficult balancing act, trying to stabilize Xbox financially while maintaining the loyalty of its most devoted players. A sudden abandonment of the multiplatform strategy seems doubtful, especially with Microsoft seeing strong PS5 performance from titles like the Forza Horizon series. The broader trajectory appears unchanged, logo policy aside. Sharma reportedly told staff this week that “hard choices” still lie ahead for Xbox. Reversing a position she had just defended a day earlier suggests the challenges are only beginning.
