Seven weeks after its theatrical debut, Nintendo’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be released for home viewing next week, available as a digital download, DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD.
Retailers will start selling the home-media package from Tuesday 19 May, which includes more than an hour of extra material, although no deleted scenes are included.
The film’s move to home purchase comes as its worldwide box-office total edges toward the £1 billion mark, but a full billion now looks increasingly unlikely. After six weeks in cinemas the tally stands at $942 million, still well short of the $1.36 billion recorded by the 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Nevertheless, the Galaxy title has proved a solid performer against its modest $110 million budget, even though critical reaction has been mixed to negative – a response that surprised creator Shigeru Miyamoto. IGN’s review gave the film a 6 out of 10.
Perhaps it gets better on a rewatch? Whether it’s your first time or you just want to see that Star Fox anime sequence again, Universal has listed the home release as having the following special features when purchased “at participating retailers”.
