Christopher Nolan has confirmed a casting twist for his forthcoming mythic action epic The Odyssey.
The Odyssey adapts Homer’s foundational saga and assembles a roster that includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya and Charlize Theron. Helen of Troy, also known as Helen of Sparta – is celebrated in Greek mythology as the world’s most beautiful woman, and her abduction by Paris of Troy ignited the decade-long Trojan War.
According to Time magazine, Nolan “complicates” the relationship between Helen of Troy and her husband, King Menelaus of Sparta, who is played by Jon Bernthal. The same report confirms that Lupita Nyong’o also portrays Helen’s sister Clytemnestra. Clytemnestra is married to Menelaus’s brother Agamemnon, performed by Benny Safdie, and Time characterises that marriage as “acrimonious.” In effect, the same actress will depict two sisters, each married to one of two brothers – a setup ripe for Greek family drama.
The reason behind Nyong’o’s dual role remains unclear. In classical myth, Helen and Clytemnestra are half-sisters, not identical twins. Helen and her brother Pollux are offspring of Zeus, while Clytemnestra and her brother Castor descend from Tyndareus; all share the same mother, Leda, who was seduced by Zeus in the guise of a swan. Leda gave birth to two eggs, one yielding Helen and Pollux, the other producing Castor and Clytemnestra with Castor mortal and Pollux immortal. Nolan may have drawn on this detail and reimagined the two women as identical twins.
This choice prompts a question: if Helen of Troy is “the most beautiful woman in the world” and the indirect catalyst for the ten-year Trojan War, does a twin sister dilute the significance of her story? As with many Nolan projects, a narrative twist could reconcile the change with the original mythology.
Time also mentioned Argos the Superdog, a nod to another superhero franchise – noting that Argos, Odysseus’s loyal canine, will enjoy an expanded role. Nolan has described The Odyssey as “the ultimate dog story,” so the emphasis fits. Audiences can also expect ample screen time for Odysseus and his son Telemachus, the latter portrayed by Spider-Man star Tom Holland.
Argos’s appearance was recently revealed in a new The Odyssey trailer that also offered a first look at Charlize Theron’s Calypso, a nymph who dwells on the island of Ogygia, and Robert Pattinson’s villainous Antinous, one of Penelope’s suitors.
The same trailer hinted at further fantastical set-pieces, including a clearer view of the Cyclops Polyphemus, a battle against armoured giants in a forest, and a desperate attempt to sail safely past a massive whirlpool.
The Odyssey is scheduled to hit cinemas on 17 July 2026.
