Marvel Reinvents X-Men via Darker Storylines

Last Updated: May 14, 2026

Marvel’s New Midnight Universe Project

Marvel fans are still trying to make sense of the decision to end the Ultimate Universe line after just three years. However, there is some good news – Marvel has a brand new alternate universe project ready to fill the gap, and Jonathan Hickman, the architect of the Ultimate Universe, is heavily involved in this new project.

The new line, called the Midnight Universe, will feature familiar characters and teams with a horror twist. The tagline for this new universe is “The light had its turn.” This suggests that the Midnight Universe will be a darker, more ominous version of the Marvel Universe we know.

Midnight Universe Lineup

The Midnight Universe will launch in August 2026 with Midnight X-Men, written by Jonathan Hickman and illustrated by Matteo Della Fonte. This will be followed by Midnight Fantastic Four in September, written by Benjamin Percy and illustrated by Kev Walker, and Midnight Spider-Man in October, written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and illustrated by Scie Tronc.

One of the exciting things about the Midnight Universe is that it is an alternate universe, free from the continuity constraints of the traditional Marvel Universe. This means that creators can introduce radical changes to the characters and storylines, making for some interesting and unexpected twists.

Creator Insights

Jonathan Hickman expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying “I’m so enthusiastic about this project—it’s the most excited I’ve been in years.” He also noted that the concept of Midnight X-Men aligns perfectly with the kind of stories he likes to tell, with a rich, open-ended mythology that combines old and new ideas.

Benjamin Percy also shared his thoughts on the project, saying “If you’ve read my work, you know that I see the world through a dark, disturbed lens. To me, it’s always midnight.” He also mentioned that he was drawn to the Fantastic Four, and saw this as an opportunity to reimagine their story in a more cosmic, Lovecraftian way.

Phillip Kennedy Johnson noted that the work being done on the Midnight line feels like history being made, with creators bringing their own unique sensibilities to the project and redefining boundaries. He also hinted that the books will feature some shocking moments that will surprise readers.

Midnight X-Men will be released on August 5, 2026, and can be preordered at your local comic shop, via comicshoplocator.com.
