Bungie Fans Launch Counterattack as Destiny Players Protest Marathon

Last Updated: May 22, 2026

A wave of frustration from Destiny players has hit the Marathon Steam page, but supporters of the new title have already launched a counter-campaign to defend it. The influx of negative reviews follows news that Bungie will release the final content update for Destiny 2 this June. Because there has been no word on a Destiny 3, many players believe the franchise is reaching an abrupt conclusion after 12 years so that the studio can focus on its new extraction shooter, Marathon.

Discontent began appearing on the Marathon Steam page today, with many users leaving negative feedback that explicitly references Destiny. Most of these reviewers have played Marathon for anywhere between one hour and 50 hours, and several have gone as far as to claim that Bungie’s new shooter is responsible for the “death” of Destiny 2.

One unhappy fan expressed their anger in a popular review, stating:

“You killed my favorite game for this… My only regret was supporting this trash in the hope that Destiny would continue. RIP D2.”

Review-bombing is a common occurrence on Steam, as frustrated PC gamers often use Valve’s platform to voice their grievances in the hope that developers will take notice. Consequently, it was expected that a dedicated group of Destiny fans would target the Marathon page in a similar fashion.

The reaction from the Marathon community was swift, with players organising a campaign of positive reviews to offset the negativity. Data provided by Steam shows that the volume of positive feedback today has significantly outweighed the negative impact. On May 22, 2026, Marathon received 531 reviews, of which 374 (70%) were positive and 157 (30%) were negative. This is a sharp contrast to May 20, the day before the Destiny announcement, when the game received 49 positive reviews and only six negative ones.

Following the news regarding the end of support for Destiny, a well-known post on the Marathon subreddit appeared yesterday. The author, describing the situation as “Sad but true,” urged fans to leave positive reviews because they anticipated that Destiny 2 players would target the game with negative Steam ratings. Many users responded with support, with some arguing that the survival of Marathon is actually the only way a Destiny 3 could ever happen.

One Reddit user noted the irony of the situation, saying:

“It’s ironic because the only road to seeing a D3 is if [Marathon] manages to survive. If Marathon dies an early death, so does Bungie.”

Another player commented on the negativity, adding: “As someone who loves both games, it’s just sad to see how spiteful people can be. I’ll never understand.”

The Destiny franchise began in 2014, followed by the release of Destiny 2 in 2017. Unless Bungie provides further details, the series appears set to receive its final major update this June.

Marathon arrived on March 5, 2026, offering a fresh perspective on the sci-fi shooter genre. While the game received strong praise from critics (including a 9/10 from IGN) and fans, it has reportedly struggled to meet commercial expectations. Bungie maintains that the future of Marathon remains bright, with recent promises of additional PvE content and a long-term vision for its narrative.
