Since 2014, the Game Awards have symbolized the high point of the video game year, recognizing the best games between January and December and announcing what will follow. Besides the famous “game of the year”, Geoff Keighley’s meeting once again has surprises in store, which feed social networks and rumors of all kinds. The 2020 edition is no exception, so let’s take a quick look at what has already been announced.
In 2019, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was named Best Game of the Year, Microsoft unveiled the Xbox Series X along with a first next-gen title, Hellblade II, and the PS5 catalog was unveiled with Godfall. On Twitter, Geoff Keighley, master of ceremonies and father of the Game Awards, explains that “it’s going to be hard to surpass the reveal of the new Xbox last year, we will obviously focus more on games this year”.
Game Awards 2020: WHAT WILL BE PRESENTED
The Next Dragon Age of Bioware
Announced at the Game Awards 2018, the next chapter of the Dragon Age license by Bioware (Mass Effect, Anthem) has been very discreet since, in addition to a short video showing the progress of the project at Gamescom 2020. The Geoff Keighley show should correct that, as revealed on Twitter, with a “new preview” of the game.
The Fourth map of Among Us
It was one of the phenomena of the summer and will be present at the Game Awards 2020: it is obviously Among Us, the video game that is a hit on Twitch. For the occasion, the title of Innersloth will unveil its fourth map, heralded as the largest to date by one of the game’s creators. No details at this time. Note that Among Us is also in the running for the best multiplayer and mobile game.
The new season of Fall Guys
After a second season focused on the Middle Ages, the rest of the Fall Guys content will be wrapped up in a winter coat, as announced by the Mediatonic studio recently. We don’t know much more yet, but the crazy battle royale has confirmed that it will show more at the Game Awards 2020. As with the previous addition of content, we should see new events, new costumes or maybe even new game modes.
A surprise from Fortnite
Even though Epic Games recently announced Kratos’ arrival in Fortnite, it looks like Tim Sweeney’s teams still have a trick up their sleeve. Precisely, on his Twitter account, Geoff Keighley published a video of a very mysterious bag, which features the name of Agent Jones, a character who usually recruits heroes from other games for the battle royale. At the end of the message, a “#TheGameAwards” leaves little room for doubt.
Gameplay for Crismon Desert
The name might not ring a bell to you, but Crimson Desert, Black Desert Online’s newest title, looks like a pretty ambitious MMO. In any case, it will have the opportunity to prove it at the Game Awards 2020, where its presence has already been confirmed. On the program: the first gameplay footage of this open-world online game, which will focus on PvE.
News from Hood: Outlaws and Legends
Unveiled a few months ago, Hood: Outlaws & Legends will also be present at the Game Awards 2020. No information on the content of this presentation, except that Sumo Digital and Focus Home Interactive say they have big news to announce. As a reminder, this is a cooperative game in a medieval world, where it will be necessary to seize well-guarded wealth by force or cunning.
An Xbox/Game Pass announcement
At the bottom of the message announcing the new games to come in December on the Game Pass, Microsoft released a little “see you at the Game Awards friends”. However, nothing is known about the content of this announcement, which will obviously relate to the subscription service. Recently, big games like Control have joined the catalog. If we dig into the videos posted by the official Game Awards Twitter account, we can see that Hellbalde II and Everwild, two big games from the upcoming Xbox team, appear in the event trailer. An imminent arrival of these titles on the Game Pass? In any case, on its Twitter account, Microsoft looks very impatient for the meeting.
A new Game Festival
Like last year, the Game Awards 2020 will be accompanied by a Game Festival, a series of “preview demos of upcoming games,” as the event’s official Twitter account explains. As of this writing, none of the games in this selection has been revealed, although it will all take place on Steam. Just recently, Geoff Keighley’s date announced that Nvidia and its streaming service Geforce Now will also be in the game. It will therefore be possible to play the demos without having to download them through this service, provided you have a good connection.
Who will be the game of the year?
So as every year, the games will be competing for the title of “game of the year” using a voting system. The votes are divided between an international jury made up of 95 media outlets and influencers whose opinion weighs 90% in the final result. The remaining 10% is in the hands of the public. To vote, you must register on the official website of the ceremony.
The list of nominees:
- Doom Eternal
- Final Fantasy VII Remake
- Ghost of Tsushima
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- The Last of Us Part II
Lastly, The event will be broadcast online on Friday, December 11, 2020. Of course, due to the pandemic, this will be a 100% digital event, without an audience.
