Sony appears to be testing a new feature on the PlayStation 5 that displays player counts for popular games. This feature, which could potentially be rolled out to all PS5 users, was discovered through a beta test. Digital storefronts such as Steam have long provided player data, but this would mark a significant shift for PlayStation.
The player count tracker has generated buzz on social media, as it provides insight into the popularity of various PS5 titles. A list of games and their corresponding player counts over the last week includes:
* Apex Legends – 1.72 million
* Battlefield 6 – 1.51 million
* Arc Raiders – 972,000
* Fortnite – 14.6 million
* Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 – 4.95 million
* Grand Theft Auto 5 – 5.13 million
* Minecraft – 4.97 million
* Marvel Rivals – 1.58 million
However, there are several factors to consider before using these numbers to gauge a game’s success. For one, it’s unclear how accurate the player counts are or how Sony gathers this data. The company has not specified details such as how much time each player logged or when the weekly measurement period begins.
IGN has reached out to Sony for comment on this feature. If Sony decides to make PS5 player counts publicly available, it will do so nearly six years after the console’s initial launch. However, the company recently stated that it still hasn’t determined the release date for the PlayStation 6.
