Universal Pictures Invites Fans on a Digital Odyssey for The Odyssey
Universal Pictures is taking fans on a digital journey with director Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey. The studio has launched an official Discord server for the movie, which has quickly gained over 100,000 subscribers in just one week. This digital odyssey will also span other platforms, including Reddit, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, Roblox, and Google Maps.
The studio recently shared on Instagram that typing a specific IP address, 50.230.145.19, into a browser’s URL field will lead users to the movie’s Discord server. Upon joining, users are greeted with a welcome message:
“Dear Castaway,
We are glad you washed ashore.
This guide will help you find your footing. Read carefully. The sea ahead is full of secrets.”
The Discord server features various channels, including “journey-chat” for ciphers, clues, and discoveries; “discord-quests” for active quests and rewards; and “reddit” to unlock hidden content on Reddit. Actor Matt Damon, who plays Odysseus, kicked off the first Discord Quest, which saw over 1.2 million users contribute 4 million planks of wood to build a massive Trojan Horse.
How the Discord Server Works
The Discord server has a leveling system, starting with The Castaway level and progressing to The Oarsman (Level 5), The Wanderer (Level 10), The Tempted (Level 15), The Cunning (Level 20), The Survivor (Level 30), and finally, The Returned (Level 45). Users earn XP by engaging in conversations, and their rank unlocks new channels, perks, and a daily Trade Goods income.
Users can also assume special roles, such as Odysseus’ Crew, The Poet, The Scholar, or The Artisan, which reflect their engagement and contributions to the community. The studio promises that more content will be unlocked via the Discord server leading up to the film’s release on July 17th.
