Unihertz has officially introduced the fifth generation of its Tank series rugged smartphones, now marketed under the 8849 subbrand. The device distinguishes itself with an integrated projector boasting 220 lumens of brightness, autofocus capabilities, and automatic keystone correction. While the company markets the output as “2K” resolution, it has not released exact pixel counts, though the figure likely sits just above the standard 1920 by 1080 definition.
The core smartphone specifications remain competitive. The 8849 Tank 5 is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9400e chipset, a processor also found in the global version of the Realme GT7. This unit features a 6.73-inch AMOLED display with a 120 Hz refresh rate and a resolution of 3200 by 1440 pixels. The device ships with 18 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512 GB of UFS 4.0 storage. The rear camera system includes three 50-megapixel sensors dedicated to main, telephoto, and night-vision photography. The primary sensor is a 1/1.3-inch Samsung GN1, which was previously utilized in the Vivo X70 Pro Plus. The night-vision module works in tandem with a 940-nanometer infrared flash. Connectivity options include dual nano-SIM slots, eSIM support, and a microSD card slot.
The USB port offers versatile functionality. It utilizes a USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface to support 120-watt fast charging and video output to external monitors via DisplayPort-out. The port also handles 25-watt reverse charging and accepts video input, allowing the phone to function as an external monitor for its projector through DisplayPort-in. An integrated speaker supports these multimedia features with an 1115W unit, a 3.5-cubic-centimeter sound chamber, 6-ohm impedance, and 1.7-watt output.
Rugged durability is a key focus. The device includes a rear-mounted spotlight and strobe light. Weighing 715 grams, the body contains a massive 17,600 mAh battery. The official spec sheet lists a voltage of 7.4 volts, which suggests the capacity might effectively double, though this detail remains unconfirmed by the manufacturer. The phone carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. Sales are scheduled to begin on June 10, 2026, with pricing to be announced on the same day.
A higher-tier model, the 8849 Tank 5 Pro, is expected to launch later. Its primary differentiator will be a built-in thermal camera.
