Call of Duty: Warzone will soon go offline on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Activision has announced, as the franchise prepares to move forward with Modern Warfare 4 without support for last-generation hardware.
Modern Warfare 4, scheduled to arrive in October, is targeting PC, Xbox Series X and S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. PS4 and Xbox One are not receiving versions of the game. (For additional details on Modern Warfare 4, see our complete roundup of everything announced so far.)
The first season of Modern Warfare 4 begins shortly after the October 23 launch. At that point, Warzone will merge with Modern Warfare 4’s content and seasonal progression systems.
The major change is that Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One will become unplayable once Season 1 begins. Prior to that cutoff, starting June 4, the battle royale will be pulled from download stores on those consoles, though players who already have it installed can keep playing until Season 1 drops. Certain Call of Duty microtransactions will also stop functioning on those platforms.
On June 25, the in-game store for Call of Duty: Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One will shut down entirely. Activision noted that players can still advance through free Battle Pass tiers, including unlocking new weapons during remaining Black Ops 7 seasons.
The PS4 and Xbox One are approaching their 13th anniversary, and with Call of Duty going current-gen exclusive for Modern Warfare 4, Warzone’s departure from older hardware was likely unavoidable given the shared content pipeline between both titles. Still, the move carries some weight. Warzone debuted to massive audiences in early 2020, months before the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S reached store shelves. That launch helped define a particular moment in gaming, one that is now closing.
The transition also arrives as Sony continues adjusting its broader PlayStation strategy. The company recently raised PlayStation Plus subscription prices, citing market conditions, and is testing a feature that would publicly display PS5 player counts for the first time.
Behind the scenes, new leadership at Infinity Ward is working to revitalize the studio’s identity by 2026, following the departure of longtime figure Vince Zampella.
