Michael Shanks Urges Stargate SG-1 Fans to Speak Up Following Amazon Revival Cancellation

Michael Shanks, best known for his role as Daniel Jackson on Stargate SG-1, is urging fans to push back against Amazon’s sudden decision to pull the plug on its planned franchise revival. The actor has become one of the most vocal figures opposing the cancellation, which arrived with little warning earlier this week. This news that Amazon had abandoned the new Prime Video series landed hard among Stargate enthusiasts, coming just half a year after the streaming giant first unveiled the project. One early report suggested the show was killed over concerns that it would fail to attract viewers outside the franchise’s established base. Joseph Mallozzi, a longtime Stargate writer who had been attached to the revival, publicly rejected that explanation.

On X/Twitter, Shanks amplified Mallozzi’s rebuttal by sharing the original coverage and insisting the series could have reached well beyond dedicated followers. The situation surrounding this cancellation, which was announced just six months after the project was revealed, has sparked a massive response from the community. Fans are now mobilizing to voice their concerns after learning that Amazon has canceled the Stargate revival.

he stated.

Since then, Shanks has drawn attention to multiple fan-driven campaigns hoping to change Amazon’s mind. These include a GoFundMe effort to fly a #SaveStargate banner above Amazon Studios headquarters, along with several Change.org petitions and a coordinated drive to voice complaints through Amazon’s customer service channels. The biggest Change.org petition has now collected just over 40,000 signatures.

While Amazon is said to remain open to future Stargate projects, Shanks told supporters that this specific series represented their best, and perhaps only, shot at a revival shaped by former SG-1 production staff and cast members.

“I’m gonna simply say this: if you are at all interested in a Stargate show with ANY of the original creators/performers involved, now is the time to say something,”

.

“Otherwise it really will be the end of that chapter forever. Let them know you are THERE.”

Shanks has stopped short of confirming his own participation in the scrapped revival, though he has steadily promoted its progress throughout development. Many observers assume his character would have surfaced in some capacity had the show moved forward.

Mallozzi, meanwhile, laid bare his disappointment in a message shared earlier this week.

“”My heart breaks,””

he wrote.

“For the incredibly talented writers who worked tirelessly to bring this show to life. For Martin [Gero, the series’ showrunner] who maintained an unwavering positive outlook throughout despite the challenges, and who always strove to make a show that would honor the fans while welcoming a new audiences. And for the long-suffering Stargate fandom who waited so long and came so close to getting a show they truly would have loved.”

Amazon has yet to issue any official statement addressing the cancellation.
