Amazon has reached a partnership agreement with Globalstar that includes taking over Apple’s 20% stake in the satellite services company, a move that strengthens the retail giant’s position in satellite internet services. The deal, which closed this week, involves Amazon assuming Apple’s infrastructure commitments as part of a broader collaboration, not a full acquisition of Globalstar itself.

The arrangement supports Amazon’s push to grow its satellite internet division, Project Kuiper. The service plans to deliver low-latency broadband through a constellation of low-Earth orbit satellites, putting it in direct competition with Starlink. To complete the transaction, Amazon set up a subsidiary called “Grapefruit Acquisition Sub II, LLC.”

Globalstar currently powers critical safety features for Apple devices, including Emergency SOS and Roadside Assistance on iPhones and Apple Watches. Amazon has pledged that these services will remain fully operational.

The company stated it intends to maintain its collaboration with Apple and potentially broaden those services. Amazon also signaled plans to pursue additional partnerships and extend satellite connectivity to other smartphone manufacturers down the line. This expansion could reshape how Android, iOS, and other platforms approach off-grid communication.

Apple had previously committed $1.1 billion to Globalstar in 2024, which included $400 million for shares and $1.1 billion for infrastructure investments. Amazon’s deal assumes those obligations.
