Red Dead Redemption 2 knocks Wii Sports off best-sellers list

Last Updated: May 21, 2026

All attention may be focused on GTA 6, but Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to thrive, with more copies sold in the last 12 months than in any other year since its launch in 2018. Rockstar Games’ epic has now shifted an incredible 85 million copies to date (up to March 2026). This is just over a third of the staggering 230 million copies sold by GTA 5, yet it still secures Red Dead Redemption 2 a place among the best-selling games of all time. It has now surpassed Wii Sports as the third best-selling game ever released. Red Dead Redemption 2’s enduring popularity only heightens the confusion around Rockstar’s decision not to release a 60fps patch for the modern console version. Fans have long been calling on the developer to update the game on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. Despite various rumours suggesting such an upgrade is in development, Red Dead Redemption 2 remains capped at 30fps on current-gen consoles. Red Dead Online has consistently lagged behind its counterpart, GTA Online, in terms of both updates and revenue. This has led some fans to speculate about what might have been if Rockstar had invested as heavily in the multiplayer component of Red Dead Redemption 2. There is frequent discussion about a potential Red Dead Redemption 3, which seems almost inevitable. Late last year, Rockstar Games co-founder and former lead writer Dan Houser stated, “Red Dead Redemption 3 ‘will probably happen.'”

In 2023, Roger Clark, who portrayed Arthur Morgan, the protagonist of Red Dead Redemption 2, expressed his certainty that fans will eventually see Red Dead Redemption 3. However, he clarified that he had no idea when that might be. Even Hollywood actor Jack Black has weighed in, revealing the character he would love to play in Red Dead Redemption 3, should it ever materialise. For now, Rockstar’s focus is firmly on GTA 6. Perhaps once the launch is over and whatever comes next for GTA Online is released, the company will revisit its iconic Wild West franchise.
