April saw the appearance of renders of the Sony Xperia 1 VIII on mt.today, and leak source @OnLeaks claimed the device would be thicker than its predecessor. The speculation listed a thickness of 8.58 mm for the eighth generation, versus 8.3 mm for the Xperia 1 VII. The official announcement, however, demonstrated that the new handset shares the same 8.3 mm profile as the earlier model.
Unhappy with the discrepancy, @OnLeaks managed to acquire a unit for testing. An electronic caliper measured a real-world thickness of 8.59 mm, which corresponds closely to the earlier leak once normal manufacturing tolerances are accounted for. The measurement was taken at the very edge of the chassis, removing any influence from a screen film, even if @OnLeaks had applied one.
