Google is expanding its artificial intelligence reach to budget-friendly smartphones running Android Go Edition. The tech giant announced that devices equipped with at least 2GB of RAM will now access a new, lightweight iteration known as Gemini Go. This move aligns with the hardware requirements established for Android 13 Go Edition, meaning a significant portion of existing devices already meet the criteria for the update. Google describes Gemini Go as a streamlined version of its main AI model, designed specifically to help users stay connected and complete tasks even on devices with limited storage capacity.
The new assistant replaces Google Assistant Go and will be delivered directly through the Google Search app. Users can activate the feature by pressing and holding the Home button or by using the power button on compatible hardware. This integration follows a broader trend of AI enhancements across the platform, similar to how Google’s search bar is getting an AI makeover for the modern era. The assistant boasts capabilities that include placing calls, sending text messages, estimating drive times, and locating nearby restaurants or EV chargers. It can also set alarms, create calendar events, and play media files. Furthermore, users can upload documents, photos, and other files to provide Gemini Go with additional context during conversations.
This phased rollout is typical for Google, as previous updates have often stretched across several weeks. Owners of eligible devices may need to wait before seeing the feature appear on their screens. The expansion of Gemini to smaller devices complements recent announcements regarding more powerful models like Gemini 3.5 Flash and Omni AI. Additionally, the increased focus on AI features coincides with other security updates, such as Google rolling out AI deepfake call detection for Android users.
