Meta Rolls Out Paid Subscriptions for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp

Meta has officially rolled out subscription plans for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp to users worldwide, the company confirmed on Wednesday. Alongside these new tiers, the tech giant hinted at future offerings designed specifically for Meta AI users, content creators, and business accounts. The move establishes a new recurring revenue stream for the platform while maintaining its existing verification services.

The new Plus tiers are priced at €3.99 monthly for Facebook and Instagram, with WhatsApp Plus coming in at €2.99 per month. Meta emphasized that these subscriptions will operate alongside Meta Verified rather than replacing it. This strategy allows users to choose between different levels of service without losing access to core verification features.

Subscribers to Facebook Plus or Instagram Plus gain access to a suite of exclusive tools designed to enhance content management. Story insights receive a significant upgrade with the addition of rewatch counts. Users can now build unlimited audience lists, effectively breaking the previous Close Friends ceiling, and keep Stories live beyond the standard 24-hour cutoff.

Additional features include the ability to preview Stories before they go live and search through viewer lists. The update also allows users to post directly to a profile while bypassing followers’ feeds entirely. The package is rounded out with animated Super Heart reactions for Stories, custom app icons, bespoke fonts for profile bios, and extra profile pins.

On the messaging side, the WhatsApp Plus tier introduces custom ringtones, fresh app themes, and more room for pinned chats. The platform also offers expanded sticker collections and better list customization tools. This development aligns with Meta’s broader strategy to differentiate its messaging service, a path recently explored through tests of View Once messages on iOS.

The subscription rollout arrives as hardware and software prices climb across the technology sector. Valve recently raised the price of its Steam Deck handheld console, while Sony bumped PlayStation Plus subscription prices and pointed to market conditions as the primary driver. Meta appears to be carving out its own recurring revenue path rather than simply following those footsteps.
