Wizards of the Coast is reportedly developing an official remake of Baldur’s Gate 2.
PC Gamer reported that BioWare’s Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 will likely both receive remakes before Baldur’s Gate 4 arrives. The publication noted that former BioWare developer Kevin Martens, who served as co-lead designer on Baldur’s Gate 2, has returned to work on the remake. Sources indicate the two remakes could launch as a combined package.
The most pressing issue, should the report prove accurate, centers on how extensive these remakes will be. A full Baldur’s Gate 3-style overhaul seems improbable. Converting the massive combined content of both original games, which spans thousands of hours, into something matching Larian’s acclaimed role-playing standard would demand an extraordinary development timeline.
Hasbro may see these remakes as a bridge between the massively successful Baldur’s Gate 3 and the eventual sequel, which faces enormous expectations from fans. Larian Studios has moved on from both Baldur’s Gate and Dungeons & Dragons to develop the next Divinity title, leaving behind some of the largest shoes to fill in the industry. For those tracking other major fantasy developments, Sam Raimi is now set to helm a Magic remake with a script by Send Help writers.
The Baldur’s Gate franchise remains active even with the extended wait for a proper sequel. An HBO television series based on Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently in production, continuing the game’s narrative in a move that caught many fans off guard. Additional tie-in projects include a prequel novel exploring Astarion’s period serving under Vampire Lord Cazador Szarr, plus an official cookbook and coloring book.
