Amazon has officially scrapped its upcoming revival of the Stargate franchise, just six months after the studio first unveiled plans for the project. The decision leaves the creative team and long-time fans in limbo, with the show’s specific plot details remaining under wraps.
According to reports, Amazon executives grew dissatisfied with the direction of the series and decided to cancel it outright. Sources indicate that leadership did not believe the concept would break out past the established Stargate fanbase to capture a wider audience.
The untitled project was being developed for Prime Video by writer and showrunner Martin Gero. His history with the property runs deep, as he previously wrote for both the original Stargate SG-1 and its follow-up series, Stargate: Atlantis. Franchise stalwarts Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi were attached to the project as consulting producers.
Amazon’s initial announcement in November framed the show as a “new original series” distinct from prior installments, designed to open “a bold new chapter” for the long-dormant science fiction property. Gero had pushed back against calling it a reboot at the time.
At the time of the announcement, Gero spoke enthusiastically about the opportunity.
“I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase,” Gero continued. “For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith – this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world – I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”
The Stargate universe first launched with Roland Emmerich’s 1994 feature film, which introduced the core premise and characters later expanded upon by the hit television spin-off SG-1. That show ran for 10 seasons and multiple TV movies before spawning Atlantis and, eventually, the darker and more standalone Stargate Universe.
Amazon’s cancellation of this particular effort does not appear to have closed the door entirely on the franchise. The company is still said to be open to other Stargate possibilities down the line, though nothing is actively being developed at the moment. This is not the only high-profile project Amazon has shelved recently, as the company has also axed Spartacus: House of Ashur after one season and cancelled its Lord of the Rings MMO while pursuing other ventures in that same franchise space.
Industry sources have not yet confirmed the specific budget or production costs associated with the scrapped project. The studio has not released a formal statement regarding the current status of the creative team or specific next steps for fans.
Amazon originally announced the project via a press release in November, though the specific year of that announcement has not been clarified in recent reports. The studio has not provided a direct link to that original press release, relying on third-party coverage for details about the initial announcement.
While the Stargate revival has been halted, other major franchises continue to face uncertainty at the streaming giant. Recent reports also highlight how X-Files Revival Gets Big Names Onboard, suggesting that Amazon remains active in the sci-fi genre despite this setback.
