A reader contacted us asking for coverage of a problem with the zoom camera on Xiaomi’s 17 Ultra flagship and its Leica-branded variants. In mid-April the company released a software update, and after installing it some users reported that the periscope module would only focus at the 3.7× zoom setting, refusing to work at any other magnification.
Posts on Xiaomi’s support forums and on Reddit suggest that the fault appears after installing HyperOS 3.0.301, and that later builds 3.0.302 and 3.0.306 have not corrected it. The issue affects owners of all three models – the standard Xiaomi 17 Ultra, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra by Leica and the Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi – and it has been seen in both global (G) and Chinese (CN) versions.
Practical testing has shown that a factory reset does not remedy the problem, and one user who visited a service centre received a replacement handset. Ten days ago Xiaomi acknowledged the bug, but no fix has been offered so far. We strongly advise against updating the software on the Xiaomi 17 Ultra and its Leica editions until an official correction is released.
