Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 could have Campaign Early Access

Xbox players who pre-ordered Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 might already have a hint about what’s coming. As

Some placeholder files for the game have appeared through pre-loading, including one labeled “Campaign Early Access Pack 1.” Separately,

revealed that during a creator presentation, someone pressed Infinity Ward directly on whether early access was in the cards. The studio reportedly dodged the question, but TDawgSmitty walked away with what he described as a “wink wink, hint hint” impression that something might be brewing. That falls well short of confirmation, yet the Xbox file discovery gives the theory more weight than simple speculation.

Activision has pulled this move before, though not recently. Both Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III opened their campaigns a week early, a practice that stopped after MWIII landed poorly with players. The backlash against that single-player experience may have pushed Activision to shelve the perk for Black Ops 6 and 7. Even though MWIII’s multiplayer earned solid marks from the community, having only harsh campaign impressions circulating for a full week before launch probably undercut the broader rollout.

This time around, the mood behind Modern Warfare 4 appears notably different. New Infinity Ward leadership has been working to revitalize the studio’s identity, and the story is swinging for something ambitious, framing its plot around a Korean peninsula conflict and steering Captain Price down a morally grayer road that pits him against onetime comrades like Ghost. If the early access leak pans out, it could signal that Infinity Ward trusts its single-player content enough to let it lead the marketing charge and build momentum before the full release drops.

There’s also a practical side to these early drops. They nudge a player base that mostly skips straight to multiplayer, Zombies, or Warzone into actually spending time with the campaign. When the story mode is the only thing live, even fans itching for competitive play end up giving the narrative a look.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 arrives October 23 on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
