Intel Posts Record AI Growth While Its Foundry Keeps Bleeding Cash

Intel’s Q2 2026 numbers look like a resurrection story. Revenue hit $16.13 billion. Adjusted EPS landed near $0.40, roughly doubling the $0.21 consensus. Data Center and AI revenue jumped 59% year-over-year to $6.3 billion. The stock popped as much as 12% after hours. But I’ve been watching the options flow and the post-earnings chatter, and the celebration feels tentative. This isn’t a turnaround victory lap. It’s a pricing power windfall disguised as a rebirth, and the market knows the difference.

The driver isn’t some long-awaited GPU killer. It’s the agentic AI wave suddenly needing massive fleets of high-end server CPUs, which is Intel’s turf, and supply got tight fast. Orders outstripped capacity so quickly that the company collected roughly $1.7 billion in customer prepayments during the quarter just to secure future allocation. Q3 guidance also surprised to the upside, with revenue projected between $15.8 billion and $16.8 billion against a $15.1 billion consensus. CEO Lip-Bu Tan called the demand “unprecedented,” and for once the superlative feels earned. Even the most bearish observers admit the top-line beat was driven by real pull, not accounting tricks.

The Agentic AI Windfall Is Real

But the mix matters. Server average selling prices surged 48% year-over-year while unit shipments climbed only about 9%. Intel isn’t moving dramatically more silicon. It’s selling a richer cocktail of Xeons and ASICs to buyers who need inference and orchestration horsepower immediately. The AI-driven slice of the business grew over 70% and now accounts for roughly 70% of total revenue. This marks the fastest revenue growth Intel has posted since 2011, and it’s coming from a segment many had left for dead. That disconnect between volume and value is the entire story right now.

What’s catching analysts off guard is that this boom is rooted in traditional data-center CPUs, not GPU accelerators. The agentic AI shift requires heavy CPU workloads for coordination and memory management. Intel’s entrenched share in that socket means it can extract premium pricing while rivals scramble to ramp alternative silicon. That’s the hidden dynamic behind the headline beat. The shortage isn’t artificial. It’s structural, and it caught Intel’s own planning teams off guard earlier this year when orders suddenly overwhelmed supply.

The Foundry Mirage Still Needs Proof

Then there’s the division that keeps Intel’s narrative from being a clean victory. The foundry segment grew revenue by roughly 31% year-over-year, but it still lost $2.09 billion in the quarter. External foundry revenue sat at a paltry $293 million. Improvements in the loss column came partly from one-time accounting items like prior impairments and accelerated depreciation rolling off, not from wafer economics suddenly turning positive. I dug into the detailed breakdowns circulating after the call, and the story is consistent across every independent thread I read. Yields on the 18A node are improving, Panther Lake costs have fallen about 50% year-to-date, but wafers remain too expensive to attract serious external volume. Intel is spending its way out of the hole, raising 2026 capex to over $20 billion from roughly $18 billion, and nobody is quite sure where that cash comes from without dilution, asset sales, or more customer prepayments.

The CFO highlighted improved factory yields and cycle times, but traders are already pricing in a headline fade. The after-hours surge gave back chunks the next session as investors remembered the foundry losses. BofA reiterated a Buy with a $160 price target, citing server CPU strength and foundry progress, but the community chatter on r/intelstock and r/AMD_Stock quickly pivoted from hype to execution scrutiny. The consensus among the skeptics I follow is straightforward. Intel is riding a cyclical CPU shortage and agentic AI panic, not proving that IDM 2.0 can stand alone. Until external customers commit at scale, the foundry is a cost center wrapped in patriotic rhetoric.

There’s an underreported angle here that deserves more airtime. The White House push for US-based leading-edge capacity gives Intel a structural geopolitical moat that TSMC simply can’t replicate on American soil. With Washington tightening AI chip export rules and subsidizing domestic fabs, Intel’s foundry ambitions aren’t just commercial bets. They’re national security priorities. That doesn’t guarantee customers will show up, but it explains why the company can hike capex into the $20 billions despite bleeding cash. The bet is that 14A and 18A roadmaps convert into real third-party volume before the prepayments run dry. If that transition stalls, the geopolitical tailwind becomes just another talking point for investors to ignore.

And then there’s the quantum elephant in the room. While the industry looks toward Microsoft’s Majorana 2 quantum chip timeline for 2029, Intel is proving that traditional silicon still owns the present. The next test is whether Intel can convert its current AI CPU dominance into a sustainable foundry business before the agentic AI cycle normalizes. If it can’t, this quarter will be remembered as the moment Intel peaked on pricing power rather than pivoted on execution.

Intel’s quarter was genuinely impressive. The fastest revenue growth since 2011 isn’t a fluke. But calling this a comeback ignores the balance sheet reality. The data center is printing money because AI suddenly needs CPUs, not because Intel fixed its manufacturing crisis. Until external foundry revenue moves from $293 million pocket change to billions in committed backlog, this is a pricing story, not a restructuring victory. I’m watching the 18A cost curve and the next round of customer deposits. If those dry up before the wafers get cheap enough, the boom becomes a blip, and no amount of AI hype will save the narrative.
